The City of God and the City of Man
For many Christian historians, St. Augustine’s De Civitate Dei or The City of God is an especially beloved work. In this second lesson, you will use the two cities—the City of God and the City of Man—as a framework for historical study. In this life, the pride of the earthly city and the humility of the heavenly city are comingled, and this battle plays out amidst cultures and amongst nations. You will also learn to distinguish pagan philosophies of history from Catholic ones. Ultimately, the study of history should lead us to a deeper appreciation of God and His Providence.
